Students as changemakers: Defining the remit of universities in fostering climate resilient communities in the context of the climate crisis

The project facilitates student-led consultation on the remit of universities in fostering climate-resilient communities and economic development in the context of the climate crisis.

It builds student leadership competencies and develops capacity within Egyptian HEIs to incorporate student voices on climate change, in advance of COP27 and beyond.

Project summary:

  • Universities perform a crucial role in responding to the challenges presented by climate change.
  • This project pays specific attention to students as global and local changemakers with the power to shape institutional responses to urgent issues, such as climate change.
  • Egypt exerts a tremendous effort to foster resilience and adaptation, which has been part of the general national plan in Egypt since the National Climate Change Strategy 2050
  • This project will bring students from NTU and GU together (total 20), from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, to form a commission with responsibility for delivering to both partner institutions a series of recommendations on what universities can do to address the climate resilience and adaptation of the communities in which they are located.
  •  The commission will undertake a series of consultations with local stakeholders in Egypt and the UK and engage with other student groups internationally
