Developing Pedagogical Strategies for Promoting Inclusive Design in Architectural Curriculum and Improving Accessibility at University Campuses v2
The workshop between Dresden University of Technology – Germany, Garmian University – Iraq, and Galala University – Egypt focused on developing pedagogical tools and strategies for effectively incorporating modules on inclusive design and accessibility into undergraduate architectural studies. The project aims to establish labs for inclusive design and train academic staff through experiential learning.
Students enrolled in classes focusing on inclusive design encompassing buildings and open spaces, in addition to undertaking practical training in Galala and Garmian in October and November 2024 respectively, collaborating with NGOs and private architectural firms to improve structural accessibility on their campuses by removing barriers and enhancing usability for all persons with disabilities.
Established inclusive design labs provides lecturers and students with the required tools to achieve these objectives, including 3D scanners for surveying existing campus buildings and spaces, virtual reality technology to simulate visual, hearing, and motor disabilities, and 3-D printers for studying and analyzing different design alternatives. A closing symposium was held in Dresden in December 2024, bringing together all university partners to discuss and exhibit students’ architectural projects produced in the developed courses.
