Site Visit to Port Said and Its Historical Urban Fabric – Fall 2022
In Fall 2022, architecture students from Galala University conducted a field study in Port Said, focusing on its unique urban heritage and historic architecture. The visit aimed to explore the city’s development as a 19th-century cosmopolitan port and examine its architectural layers shaped by colonial, vernacular, and modern influences.
Students toured key sites including the European District, the historic Bazaar Abbas, waterfront promenades, and residential quarters reflecting French, Italian, and British colonial styles. The trip offered firsthand observation of urban morphology, building typologies, and conservation challenges in the context of contemporary urban pressures.
This site visit was integral to developing students’ critical understanding of heritage preservation, adaptive reuse, and inclusive urban regeneration, linking historical context with sustainable architectural thinking.
